germination / termination

her arms outstretched

like petals toward the sun

she pauses and asks:

who will i become?

the world is filled with wonder

and i wish to explore

surely i am destined

for something more

her brothers merely chuckle

her father rolls his eyes

her mother wastes no time at all

passing the cleaning supplies

as suds form on the window

she sees the flowers outside

oh to get the chance to bloom!

but she must be a bride

her feet firmly planted

like roots deep in the dirt

she stands before her husband

apathetic but alert

as she lies upon her deathbed

the blossoms wilt and cry

for the woman who could never bloom

and the world that watched her die
